BNP (B-type natriuretic peptide)

BNP (B-type natriuretic peptide): BNP (B-type natriuretic peptide or brain type natriuretic peptide is a hormone released from the heart in response to stretch, usually due to heart failure. Another related hormone is ANP or atrial natriuretic peptide, which is released from the upper chambers of the heart (atria) in response to stretch. Levels of BNP can be estimated as point of care test in the emergency department and is useful in identifying the cause of breathlessness as possibly heart failure.
